Stories from the Studio

North Tyneside Art Studio

North Tyneside Art Studio, based in the Linskill Centre in North Shields, has been using art and creative activities to transform the lives of people experiencing mental health problems since 1991.

The studio provides art sessions, support from professional artists, and workshops in techniques such as glasswork, creative writing and life drawing. Day trips and visits to galleries, exhibitions and events are regularly organised.

The Curiosity Creative team worked with North Tyneside Art Studio for ten weeks, running digital storytelling workshops with a group of Art Studio participants.

We started by doing some activities which helped people to think about the stories they’d like to share and a number of themes emerged, including how the art studio has helped with people’s recovery, what the art studio means to different people, as well as stories about sharing time with family and friends.

"The project we undertook with Curiosity Creative enabled studio artists to explore a whole new world of creativity and expression, developing new digital and story making skills, which resulted in some fabulous work. The studio artists thoroughly enjoyed working with Alex, building strong trusting relationships with her allowing them to explore parts of their lives and experiences in a safe environment and gaining confidence and personal strength as a result.

A selection of the videos produced were shown publicly at our AGM and 2 people gave presentations to the audience about their work.

Since this project 2 of the participants have since progressed to FE education, this work forming part of the portfolio of work that gained them acceptance onto the course."
