"I just want a job!"

By Sarah Irving

Hi I'm Sarah Irving, I'm a Connexions advisor linked to Newcastle YOT. My job is to help young people with Newcastle YOT to make good decisions about training, education and employment. I first heard of a work related project linked to environmental conservation in October 2012 and by February 2012 the Skill Mill was launched. What this actually means to me is that I can offer an employment option to young people from Newcastle YOT that young people are really keen to do. If I meet with a young person who is unemployed and I get the feeling that they would be really good, I'm able to talk to the Skill Mill supervisor about it and ask them to give that young person a trial. What’s most rewarding for me is that there are two young people who I met as part of my job when they were unemployed, I referred them to Davie and Sean, they joined the Skill Mill and they've gone on to do really well after that. That's the best thing for me about the Skill Mill - being able to get young people a job with a future.
