Movie Madness
Nasreen talks about her love of Bollywood films and how she used to try and escape to the Tyneside Cinema without her annoying little brother in tow to watch them!
It’s the weekend again, I’m so excited, it’s nearly time to go to the pictures again, I can’t wait. I love watching Indian films, I hope no one sees me crying at the sad bits, I don’t think they can, I’ve learnt to cry really quietly and discreetly. I hope Saj my little brother isn’t coming with us, all he goes for is the ice cream at half time, he sits there and asks the same question over and over again; ‘whens it half time?’ he spoils the film for me, he could just stay at home and have his ice cream. I wonder if there will be a lot of people there that I know, will I see so and so? Can’t wait to pick up the poster to see what films are on next week and who’s in it. We have managed to sneak out of the house without my brother, we are driving off, the queues for the tickets are really long, we get the tickets and go upstairs, as I go upstairs I glance at the kiosk where all the sweets and ice cream are. I don’t know why Saj is so obsessed with them when he comes here, they aren’t as important as the film, I don’t even like getting ice cream from here because its always half melted by the time you get it; I do not like half melted ice cream. The film started and I’m really enjoying it, it has plenty of songs, you can’t have a film without songs. It's intermission now you get a fifteen minute break, after all 3 hours to sit through a film is a long time isn’t it? An hour and a half later it’s all over, the sad bits, the funny bits, the songs, and most of the time it’s a happy ending. Now the mass exodus, so many people I know, everybody’s in their bright dressiest clothes, it’s almost like we are at some wedding or party. It takes a while to get out of the cinema after having to stop to talk to all the people we know. I have to stop and collect the poster advertising next weeks film, will we be going to Tyneside cinema or West Jesmond or both, roll on next week.
