In partnership with the Ouseburn Trust, Curiosity Creative led a six month project called Beyond the Map which captured untold personal stories which all related to a specific area of Newcastle – the Ouseburn Valley.
A number of different groups took part in this project including participants from Age UK, Tyneside Women’s Health, Northumbria Daybreak, parents of children at Hotspur Primary School, and a final group of people who came together through an open recruitment process and named themselves The Ouseburn Gang.
Everyone attended group workshops where they were encouraged to talk to each other about their memories of life in the area, sharing information from the distant past to the present day. Everyone then made their own digital story to capture their memories.
The culmination of the programme was a public screening of the stories in the Star & Shadow cinema in the Ouseburn Valley, revealing the hidden history of this very special area of Newcastle.
"For our Beyond the Map project Curiosity Creative worked with a wide range of people in the area, from members of an Age UK lunchclub to young people at a learning disability centre, as well as with an open group attracting new people. Each person who wanted to produced a short digital story using the ipads and felt proud of their contribution, their story and how they had learnt to use new technology. Curiosity Creative understood our goals, respected, enthused and enabled our participants, and achieved the outcomes we agreed."
